How We Track Heating Oil Prices

SoME Oil Prices is an independent regional comparison source. We show observed dealer prices with their timing and limitations so homeowners can compare useful facts—not manufactured certainty.

Four rules guide the board

Public or confirmed sources

We use publicly visible dealer pages and quote tools, plus dealer-supplied information that passes review. We retain the source and observation context.

Time-stamped observations

A price is an observation at a point in time, not a promise. Freshness labels tell you when the retained price was seen.

Missing stays missing

We do not invent a price to fill a gap. Failed, ambiguous, stale, or unavailable observations remain distinct from current prices.

Rankings stay factual

The default comparison is based on the displayed data. A dealer cannot pay to change its price, freshness, or organic position.

How a price reaches the board

Our collection system is designed to preserve provenance and make uncertainty visible. It is also being expanded dealer by dealer, so coverage will not be complete everywhere.

  1. 01 · Identify

We identify a canonical dealer source, such as an official pricing page or read-only quote result. We do not treat proximity alone as proof that a dealer serves a town or ZIP code.

  2. 02 · Observe

The collector records the visible price, product context, source URL, and observation time. No order is placed and no contact form is submitted as part of routine collection.

  3. 03 · Check

Automated validation rejects malformed values and can hold unusual changes, stale source dates, or ambiguous results for review. Older migrated records are being audited as the collection pipeline matures.

  4. 04 · Retain

Only retained observations can appear in the comparison. The board keeps missing data visible as missing and labels the age of the latest retained observation.

  5. 05 · Confirm

Before ordering, confirm the final price and terms directly with the dealer. Minimum delivery, ZIP eligibility, fees, payment method, taxes, discounts, and timing can change the checkout total.

What the displayed price means

A comparison observation—not a guaranteed invoice

The board generally shows the latest retained per-gallon price associated with a dealer source. Depending on the source, that may be a posted cash price or a quote for a tested ZIP code and product. It may not include every fee, minimum, tax, discount, payment condition, or delivery restriction.

Freshness labels: “Today” means the latest retained observation is dated today. A label such as “2d old” reports its age. “Awaiting data” means no retained price is available. A collection failure never creates a substitute price.

Coverage, corrections, and dealer input

Advertising never rewrites the data

SoME Oil Prices may eventually offer clearly labeled sponsorships or enhanced dealer profiles. Paid relationships will be visually separated from organic price results. They cannot change a factual price, freshness label, methodology, or organic price ordering—and they cannot hide a cheaper verified dealer.
